Rainbow Text Generator

Make a word in smoothly moving rainbow colours. Let the rainbow travel across the letters in wave mode, or let the whole word cycle through every hue in solid mode. Set how many colour bands cross the text, add an outline, and download a looping rainbow text GIF. It runs in your browser with no sign-up and no watermark.

How to use it

  1. Pick a rainbow style

Rainbow wave, Solid cycle, Tight stripes or Outlined in Style presets. Each one sets a word, a font, a mode and a background. All of them can be changed afterwards.

  2. Type your text and choose a font

Thick letters show more colour. Anton, Bebas Neue, Fredoka and Pacifico all work well. Thin fonts show the rainbow as a narrow line, so use a larger size with them.

  3. Choose wave or solid and set the bands

In Mode, pick Wave for a rainbow that travels across the letters or Solid cycle for one colour that changes over time. In wave mode, set Colour bands across the text from 1 to 4. Add an Outline if you need more contrast.

  4. Download your rainbow GIF

Press Download GIF. The 24-frame loop is encoded in your browser and saved straight away. The estimated size is shown under the preview before you export.

How the rainbow is made

In wave mode, the letters are filled with one long gradient that passes through every hue, from red through yellow, green and blue to violet and back to red. The colours are fully saturated and slightly bright, so they stay vivid on dark and light backgrounds. Each frame moves the gradient to the right by a fraction of one band, and after 24 frames it has moved exactly one band, so the loop repeats without a jump.

The bands setting decides how many full rainbows fit across the width of the text. On a short word, a band cannot be narrower than about 1.2 times the text size, so the slider has less effect on short words than on a long phrase. Multi-line text shares one gradient across the whole text block, so a colour sits at the same horizontal position in every line.

Solid cycle

Solid cycle fills the whole word with one colour and turns the hue through 360 degrees over the 24 frames. It reads as a calm colour pulse rather than a moving stripe, and it is the lightest option: the four examples on this page were between 86 KB and 173 KB, and solid cycle was the smallest.

Use solid cycle for short words, for headings that should not draw too much attention, and for outlined lettering, where a steady outline keeps the shape clear while the fill changes. On a light background add a dark outline, because pure yellow and light green lose contrast against white.

Smooth colour in a GIF

A GIF can hold at most 256 colours. A smooth rainbow has far more shades than that, so the encoder picks a palette from frames sampled across the loop and rounds the rest. At the sizes on this page the result looks smooth, but a very large canvas or a long text with many bands may show visible steps in the colour.

Tick Transparent background and the GIF is written with a real transparent colour. GIF transparency is on or off, so soft anti-aliased edges are blended toward the Edge colour you choose. Set it to the colour of the page where the GIF will sit. An outline also helps hide any rough edge.

What people use rainbow text for

  • Pride and celebration messages

A word in moving rainbow colours is a bright, friendly way to share a celebration or a greeting.

  • Kids and classroom material

Colourful headings suit worksheets, slides and notices, and a short loop keeps attention without a heavy file.

  • Headers and name banners

A name in rainbow colours works as a small animated header for a profile or a page.

  • Stickers and overlays

Export with a transparent background and place the word over a photo or video in an editor that supports transparent GIFs.

  • Party and event posts

Short words such as PARTY or WELCOME with a moving rainbow draw the eye in a feed.

How this tool works and its limits

What this rainbow text generator does with your text, and where it stops.

  • Everything happens in your browser. Your text is not uploaded, no account is needed and no watermark is added.
  • Text is limited to 200 characters. The canvas can be up to 640 pixels wide and 640 pixels tall, within 307,200 pixels in total.
  • The loop is 24 frames at 5 hundredths of a second, which is 1.2 seconds. Every GIF is capped at 150 frames, and the estimate under the preview is usually within a quarter of the real size.
  • GIF files hold at most 256 colours, so the smooth rainbow is rounded to a palette. Large canvases and many bands may show colour steps.
  • Transparent GIFs have on-off transparency only. Soft edges blend toward the Edge colour you pick.
  • The text colour control is not shown, because the rainbow decides the colour of the letters. The background colour and the outline colour are still yours to choose.
  • We tested this page in Chrome. It needs a 2D canvas and a Web Worker. If your browser cannot encode the GIF, the page shows an error and nothing is uploaded.

Questions, answered

How do I make rainbow text?

Type your word, pick a rainbow style, choose wave or solid cycle and press Download GIF. The preview shows the exact animation that will be saved.

Is the rainbow text generator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark. Your text stays on your device. The only paid option is the AI version, which costs 1 credit.

What is the difference between wave and solid cycle?

Wave fills the letters with a rainbow gradient that moves across them, so different letters have different colours at the same time. Solid cycle gives the whole word one colour at a time and changes it through all the hues.

Can I make rainbow text with a transparent background?

Yes. Tick Transparent background and choose an Edge colour that matches the page where you will use the GIF. Soft edges are blended toward that colour.

Why does my rainbow have only a few colours showing?

A short word can only show part of a band at a time. Lower the number of bands, make the text larger or use a longer word. A band cannot be narrower than about 1.2 times the text size.

Can AI make a fancier rainbow version?

Yes. The button under the preview opens the AI tab of Text to GIF with your text and the sticker pop style filled in. It draws lettering with decoration around it, costs 1 credit and needs a signed-in account.
