AVIF to GIF converter

Drop an AVIF image and get a GIF. A still AVIF becomes a one-frame GIF. An animated AVIF becomes an animated GIF only where your browser can read its frames, and the page tells you plainly when yours cannot. The file is decoded by your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Drop your AVIF file

Drop a .avif file onto the box or click to choose one. Files up to 25 MB are accepted. The page checks the file and your browser before it opens it.

  2. Read what it found

The left pane shows the picture with its size and frame count. A note says when the AVIF is a still, which gives a one-frame GIF.

  3. Set width, transparency and size

Pick a width, choose whether to keep transparent areas with a matte colour, and choose balanced or smaller-file mode for the GIF colours.

  4. Convert and download

Press Convert to GIF. The GIF appears next to the AVIF with both file sizes, and Download saves it as a .gif file.

Examples made with this tool

These GIFs were made from AVIF files that we saved from our own pictures and then read back before converting. They are stills, so each GIF has one frame. The animated case depends on your browser, and the support check below shows what yours reports.

Stills and animations are different cases

An AVIF can be one picture or an animation, like a GIF. A still AVIF is decoded by your browser's image decoder, and the page draws it onto a canvas and writes a one-frame GIF. That is the common case, and it worked in our tests in current Chrome.

An animated AVIF has many frames, and the browser has to hand them over one by one. The page uses the browser's ImageDecoder for that, and only when ImageDecoder says it can decode AVIF images. The result keeps each frame's timing.

What happens when your browser cannot read the animation

AVIF files say in their header whether they hold an image sequence, and the page reads that header. If the file is animated and your browser cannot read the frames, the page stops with a message and does not make a GIF.

It will not give you the first frame and call it the animation. This site does not include an AV1 decoder, so where the browser cannot decode the frames, the answer is to open the page in a browser that can, or to export the animation as video or GIF from the program that made it.

Why AVIF files get bigger as GIFs

AVIF is a modern image codec built for small files. GIF is from 1987 and stores indexed colour with simple compression. Converting from AVIF to GIF nearly always makes the file larger, and the examples above show it.

Use the width option to keep the GIF small. The GIF is for places that need a GIF, not for saving space. If your destination takes AVIF or WebP, keep the original.

When AVIF to GIF helps

  • A place that does not take AVIF

Many uploaders and older tools know GIF but not AVIF.

  • An AVIF saved from a web page

Turn a picture you downloaded into a format that opens everywhere you share it.

  • A transparent logo or sticker

Keep the see-through background with a matte colour for the page it sits on.

  • A first frame for further edits

Make a GIF you can then resize, crop or animate with the other tools.

  • An animated AVIF, where it is readable

If your browser reports it can decode the frames, convert the animation to a GIF.

How this tool works and its limits

This is what the converter does with your file, and where it stops.

  • Your file never leaves your device. The AVIF is decoded by your browser and the GIF is written there, with no upload and no account.
  • AVIF files up to 25 MB are accepted. A GIF made here has at most 300 frames and 30 seconds of playing time, and the long side is capped at 1024 px.
  • A still AVIF gives a one-frame GIF. An animated AVIF is converted only when your browser reports that it can decode AVIF frames.
  • This site has no AV1 decoder. If your browser cannot read an AVIF, the page says so and stops.
  • GIF transparency is on or off, so partly transparent pixels are blended with the matte colour you choose, or the transparent areas are filled with it.
  • The GIF has at most 256 colours, so gradients can show banding, and the file is usually larger than the AVIF.
  • We built and tested the tool in current Chrome with still AVIF files. The check below asks your own browser about animated AVIF.

Questions, answered

How do I convert an AVIF to a GIF?

Drop the AVIF above, choose a width, and press Convert to GIF. The GIF plays next to the picture with both file sizes, and Download saves it.

Can it convert an animated AVIF?

Only where your browser says it can decode the frames of an AVIF. The support list below shows your browser's answer. Where it cannot, the page tells you and makes no GIF.

Why does a still AVIF give a GIF with one frame?

A still picture has one frame, and a GIF of one frame is still a valid GIF.

Will the GIF be smaller than the AVIF?

Almost never. AVIF compresses far better than GIF, so a converted file is usually several times larger.

What happens to transparency?

It is kept as GIF transparency. Because GIF is on or off, soft edges are blended with a matte colour that you choose.

Is the file uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes the AVIF and the GIF is written on your device.
