How to use it

  1. Drop your PNG files

Drop up to 20 PNG files, or click to choose them. Each can be up to 10 MB. The list shows each file's size, dimensions and whether it has transparency.

  2. Pick a width

Keep each PNG's own size (up to 1024 px on the longer side) or choose 640, 480 or 320 px wide. Remove any file with the X button.

  3. Convert

Press Convert. Each PNG becomes a GIF, and the list shows the size before and after for each file.

  4. Download

Download a GIF from its row, or press the ZIP button to get all of them in one file.

Examples made with this tool

Each example is a PNG from our own sticker set converted by the tool's own code. The PNG is on the left and the GIF is on the right, shown on a dark background so you can see the transparency.

A transparent PNG at 320 px converted to a one frame GIF. The see-through background survives, and the GIF is a single frame, because one PNG is one picture.Settings usedPNG converted on its own, 320 px wide, transparency kept.PNG 59 KB (320 × 320 px) → GIF 24 KB (320 × 320 px)

Convert a PNG to a GIF, one file at a time

This page does the plain version of the job: every PNG you drop becomes its own GIF. If you drop five files, you get five GIFs. The conversion keeps the picture and its transparency, and gives you the choice of a width. It is useful when a site, an app or a form wants GIF files and all you have is PNGs.

Because it works one file to one file, you can drop a whole folder of icons or stickers at once, convert them in one go and take them as a ZIP. Each GIF keeps the PNG's name with a new extension.

Transparent PNG to GIF: what happens to soft edges

PNG supports a full range of transparency, so edges can fade smoothly. GIF only has two states for each pixel: fully see-through or fully opaque. When the tool converts a transparent PNG, pixels that are mostly see-through become transparent and the others stay solid, and the edge pixels are blended with white so the outline looks smooth on a light page.

On a dark background a light fringe can show. If that bothers you, prepare the PNG with a darker edge, or use it on a lighter background. The result will always be hard-edged, because that is how GIF transparency works.

One GIF per PNG, or one animation from many?

Two different jobs share the words PNG to GIF. One is converting each PNG into its own GIF, which is what this page does. The other is putting several PNGs into a single animated GIF as frames, like a flipbook. That is a slideshow job, and the Image to GIF tool does it, with delays, order and crossfade.

The mode switch at the top of the tool has both: choose PNG sequence to animated GIF and it explains the difference and links straight to Image to GIF. If you only need one animated GIF made from a sequence, start there.

When PNG to GIF helps

  • A site that only takes GIF

Some uploaders, directories and old tools accept GIF but not PNG.

  • A batch of icons or stickers

Convert a whole folder in one go and download them as a ZIP.

  • A transparent logo for a legacy system

Keep the see-through background in a format an older system accepts.

  • A frame ready to animate later

Make single frame GIFs to drop into another animation tool.

  • Smaller flat graphics

For simple artwork with few colours, a GIF can be smaller than the PNG.

How this tool works and its limits

This is what the converter does, and where it stops.

  • Your PNG files never leave your device. They are opened and converted in your browser, with no upload and no account.
  • Up to 20 PNG files at a time, each up to 10 MB. Only PNG is accepted here.
  • Each PNG becomes a one frame GIF. For an animation from several images, use the Image to GIF tool.
  • The width options are Original, 640, 480 and 320. Original is capped at 1024 px on the longer side.
  • A GIF has at most 256 colours, and a pixel is either transparent or opaque. Photos and soft gradients will look flatter than the PNG.
  • An animated PNG (APNG) converts to a still GIF of its first frame. Use a dedicated tool for the animation.
  • We built and tested the tool in current Chrome. PNG decoding is part of every modern browser.

Questions, answered

How do I convert a PNG to a GIF?

Drop the PNG above, choose a width and press Convert. Download the GIF from its row. Everything runs in your browser.

Can I convert several PNGs at once?

Yes. Drop up to 20 PNG files and each becomes its own GIF. Press the ZIP button to download them together.

Does a transparent PNG stay transparent as a GIF?

Yes. Transparent pixels stay transparent. GIF cannot do partial transparency, so soft edges become hard, blended with white.

How do I make one animated GIF from several PNGs?

Use the Image to GIF tool. This page converts each PNG on its own; the mode switch at the top links to the tool that builds one animation.

Why does my GIF look flatter than the PNG?

GIF is limited to 256 colours. PNGs with gradients or photos have far more, so some colour detail is lost.

Are my PNG files uploaded?

No. They are converted on your device. Nothing is sent to a server and you need no account.
